1998 Randy Johnson Game-Worn Astros Helmet

Description
The Seattle Mariners had little hopes of resigning Randy Johnson after the 1998 season. Given little choice, the team jettisoned the future Hall of Fame pitcher to t1:city w_st=”on”>t1:place w_st=”on”>Houston midway through the ’98 campaign. The elongated lefty finished his abbreviated t1:city w_st=”on”>Houston career with a sparkling 10-1 mark and landed in t1:state w_st=”on”>t1:place w_st=”on”>Arizona the following year. This size “7 1/4” helmet was worn by Johnson during his half season in t1:city w_st=”on”>t1:place w_st=”on”>Houston. The ABC manufacturer’s wheel indicates the helmet was made in November of 1993. It is quite common, however, for teams to use helmets for a number of years.
According to Lou Lampson’s letter: “The font of the number “51” (on back) is correct for the Astros during this period. At certain angles under bright light, the outline of a previous number is visible. It appears to be #22.”
The helmet shows great use with numerous surface scratches and marks. Three stickers reside in the upper crown: ABC size, warning and Diamond Collection. One of the few surviving relics from the Big Unit’s short stay in Houston.
