Tito Ortiz is an American retired mixed martial artist. He is the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion from Apr. 14, 2000- Sept. 26, 2003. He lost the title to Randy Couture via unanimous decision. After his loss, he emerged as one of the sport’s biggest stars, becoming the biggest pay-per-view draw of 2006 for his fights with Liddell, Forrest Griffin, and Ken Shamrock. He also appeared on the covers of various magazines.
Along with fighters like Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell, he was one of the sports early stars. Ortiz also appeared as one of the coaches on the reality television series, The Ultimate Fighter 3, and as a contestant on the Celebrity Apprentice reality show. Outside of his fighting career, Ortiz is the CEO of the Punishment Athletics MMA equipment and clothing line. He also owns an MMA training gym called Punishment Training Center, which is located in his hometown of Huntington Beach, California. On July 7, 2012, Ortiz became the ninth inductee into the UFC Hall of Fame.
In 1999, Ortiz fought Frank Shamrock for what is now known as the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship at UFC 22. Despite controlling Shamrock for the majority of the fight, Ortiz ended up losing via submission due to strikes. Following the victory, Shamrock retired and vacated the championship. The Middleweight division was then officially renamed the Light Heavyweight (205 lb) division and Ortiz was chosen, along with Wanderlei Silva, as a top contender. Ortiz defeated Silva for the vacant Light Heavyweight Championship at UFC 25 via unanimous decision. He went on to defend the Light Heavyweight Championship a record five times in the following three years, defeating Yuki Kondo, Evan Tanner, Elvis Sinosic, Vladimir Matyushenko and Lion’s Den head Ken Shamrock.
These fight worn Harbinger gloves come from Tito’s Championship fight against Frank Shamrock at UFC 22. Tito signed and dated the gloves and gave them as a gift to Big John McCarthy for his MMA collection after the battle. They show tremendous wear and have tape residue present. One glove was autographed by Ortiz and the other the fight detailing was added, “9-24-99 Frank vs. Tito.” An autographed 8×10 photo of Ortiz with the inscription, “2x UFC Champ” is also included from the McCarthy collection.
