1st AFL Regular Season N.Y. Titans Game-Used Ball, 9-11-1960 From Don Maynard Collection w/Letter
Out of stock
When Sammy Baugh’s New York Titans took the field for the very first time on Sept. 11, 1960, know one knew if the AFL would last a game, a month or a year.
The Titans’ franchise was particularly vulnerable and indeed had to later be rescued by the league.
But their first year was a respectable 7-7 and their first game was a resounding success. Before 10,000 plus fans in the old Polo Grounds on Sept. 11 (two weeks before the start of the NFL season), the Titans scored 27 unanswered points after spotting the Bills a 3-0 first period lead, and won 27-3.
Don Maynard, a young receiver refugee from the cross-river Giants by way of the CFL, led the Titans with 116 receiving yards. After the game, he was awarded a game ball used that day as a remembrance of the club’s first win and his prominent role in the inaugural victory.
The ball is a Joe Foss AFL ball with special inaugural season markings. Maynard’s last name is penned above the Spaulding logo quite faintly but still readable.
The ball remains in excellent condition, and has been in Maynard’s possession since that game.
A first win in franchise history game used ball is a treasure in and of itself, but is even more endearing as being emblematic of a Hall of Famer’s achievement (116 yards) in helping his club to their first-ever win.
This offering comes with Don Maynard’s personal letter of authenticity which is eminently displayable with the historic ball.
