Description
A four-time Pro Bowl selection from 1981 to 1984, Dwight Hicks was a key player on the 49ers dynasty in the 1980s, assisting his team to NFL Championship wins in Super Bowl XVI and Super Bowl XIX. Hicks played with the 49ers from 1975-85.
In the 1981 season, Hicks led the NFL in interceptions (9) and return yards (239), and went on to make a big impact in the Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals. After the 49ers lost a fumble on the opening kickoff, the Bengals had a great scoring opportunity and drove to San Francisco 5-yard line. However, Hicks made a clutch interception to prevent the Bengals from scoring. His interception set up a 49ers touchdown on their ensuing drive and helped San Francisco build up a 20–0 lead at halftime, eventually winning the game 26–21.
Presented is a game worn Dwight Hicks San Francisco 49ers football helmet. It dates to the mid 80’s era when Bronco Hinnick was the equipment manager (1984-1998 era). Before Hinnick was Chico Norton. This is from the Bronco era.
The Riddell helmet features a gold shell with the classic 49ers logo decal on each side. The clips and chin strap are snapped on. On the facemask, clips from the era were added. This was because originally the facemask was detached as the clips were cracked.
On the exterior, it shows heavy wear with soiling, indentations and hit marks throughout. Ton’s of use is exhibited on the exterior and interior of the helmet.  The black circle in magic marker, identifies the pinhole leak so the helmet would not have passed to have been worn for the next season. The padding in the interior is well worn with sweat/soiling. The padding also includes a bladder system.
Also to note, there’s no rear warning detail because it started in 1984 to mandate the stickers to appear on the helmets. The 49ers as other teams completely implemented the sticker a year or so later. Overall, a tremendous vintage game worn 49ers helmet.
