As myth evolved to legend, the community of organized baseball solemnly reveres 1839 as their birth year. As such, the Gateway Stamp Co. prepared a silk cachet to be released in 1989 celebrating the game’s 150th Anniversary. Showcased in that tribute were the then-living members of Major League’s 500 Home Run Club. At the time there were eleven of them – all of whom signed this Gateway envelope.

The ballpoint signatures (to include Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Reggie Jackson, Harmon Killebrew, Mickey Mantle, Eddie Mathews, Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Frank Robinson, Mike Schmidt, and Ted Williams) are all “trong>9-10” in every consideration. There are two perfect cancellations – both of them in Atlantic City – dated January 14 and February 14, 1989. The stamps, their placement, the envelope, and the cachet are all unimpeachable.

Pete Rose’s signature also appears on this keepsake. It was about six months before his banishment and, we’re to understand, that it was Rose who orchestrated the convergence of the eleven principals who signed the cachets.
