A Used WWII Era British Naval Flag.  The total presentation measures approximately 65″ x 36″.  This flag was purchased from a West London Antique Shop in the Spring of 2006.  At the time of purchase, the flag was described as originating in Portsmouth, and was flown on an unknown British vessel during WWII.  The flag has been expertly framed using the highest quality materials.  The flag itself appears to be made of a linen/canvas material.  There is heavy use/damage throughout the flag.  Before being framed, the flag was carefully examined.  Some military markings/notations existed on the trim of the flag, but was difficult to distinguish what these markings may indicate. No paperwork accompanied the flag when it was originally purchased.  While the flag naturally has significant historical importance, there is no detailed provenance on when or where the flag was flown or if it had seen battle.  The flag and frame are sold as an exquisite piece of art with historical significance.

The flag was framed with the utmost care.  A heavy wood frame was chosen to appropriately match the weight of the item, and in an antique naval theme.  The glass used was a museum quality glass with appropriate protection for the flag.  The matting used behind the flag was a seafoam green to signify the ocean, along with a blue matte to the front edge of the frame.  Please note:  there are some scratches, scuffs and a couple of chips around the edge of the frame from storage over the years.  Please refer to the provided photographs to see examples of this age/damage.  In our opinion, these do not alter the value and in fact provide an appropriate antiqued look to the framing that matches the history of the flag.

This presentation weighs over 40lbs in total, and requires throughtful/sturdy hanging when being hung by the purchaser.  Due to the weight of this item, we will only ship to those who reside in the lower 48 (USA).  It is understandable that this may appeal to overseas buyers, who may want to be in touch to discuss shipping options prior to bidding.

This is a truly exquisite and important piece of history, and framed/presented in a manner that makes for a fine piece of art in a home.
