Hattie McDaniel started her film career playing a maid in “The Golden West” in 1932. Her maid-mammy type character continued in “Judge Priest” (1934) and “Alice Adams” (1935). The greatest role of her career was as Mammy in “Gone With the Wind” (1939). She won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and was the first African American to win an Academy Award.
Presented is an original promotional 8×10 photo of Mammy with a glossy finish. It shows the actress in a polka-dotted dress. She signed in black felt tip on the upper portion “Lots of Love / to / “Lucy” / From / “Mammy”/ Hattie McDaniel” – 5/6/40 G.W.T.W. It should be noted that McDaniel’s autograph is quite rare and desirable.
