Description

1939 was known as baseball’s Centennial season and the introduction game had the sport’s fiercest rivals in battle – the Yankees and the Red Sox on April 20, 1939.

Presented is the second known example of that special game’s program (April 20, 1939) to hit the market at auction.

The Opening Day game was held at Yankee Stadium before the Red Sox went back to Fenway to face the Senators.

In this game, the rookie Ted Williams was ready to go up against the “Iron Horse” of the Yankees, Lou Gehrig. Gehrig would subsequently retire a few days later “for the good of the team”. Ted Williams had his first career hit in the game which was a double off of Red Ruffing.

The program is in great condition, fully scored from that first game. It is intact although it has pasted newspaper clippings throughout (see photos). Lastly to note, there is also a penned writing note on the cover in regards to the game.
