After the baseball commissioner Kenesaw Landis died in 1944, an official in the War Department campaigned for Senator Happy Chandler to replace him. Chandler was the last candidate put forth in the April 1945 meetings and was elected by unanimous vote of the team owners. He resigned his Senate seat in order to take the position.
Presented is the document that established Chandler’s position in Major League Baseball as the new Commissioner in 1945. Approval was necessary from all presiding team owners from which this document is autographed. Signers include: Connie Mack; Eddie Collins; Branch Rickey; Larry MacPhail; Ford Frick; William Harridge; Happy Chandler; Clark Griffith. As well as Philip Wrigley; William Benswanger; Alva Bradley; Sam Breadon; Donald Barnes; John Zeller; Horace Stoneham; R.R.M. Carpenter and Grace Comiskey. Awesome piece.
