Description

UFC 20: Battle for the Gold was a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on May 7, 1999 at the Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham, Alabama.

It was the final event of what the UFC called “The Road to the Heavyweight Title”. The Road to the Heavyweight Title was a tournament spanning over four events. It was held to determine the Heavyweight Champion after Randy Couture vacated the title after some disputes with UFC officials over his contract. Bas Rutten ended up defeating Kevin Randleman to become the new Heavyweight Champion in what was known as a very controversial split decision.

This black shirt was worn by referee Big John McCarthy in the octagon for several of the match-ups in UFC 20. It come’s directly from Big John’s private collection. The manufacturer tagging in the collar shows it is Body Alive [L] – the verso also has a custom design from Body Alive. The front chest features the event details – UFC XX – BATTLE FOR GOLD and Body Alive logo embroidered in white.  For authentication it was autographed on the front in silver paint pen by him with the inscription, “WORN – May 7, 1999″.
