Bill Romanowski went on to a 16-year career in the NFL, playing for the San Francisco 49ers (1988–1993), Philadelphia Eagles (1994–1995), Denver Broncos (1996–2001), and Oakland Raiders (2002–2003). After his career, he was listed by ESPN as the fifth dirtiest player in professional team sports history.
He played 243 consecutive games during the 1988-2003 seasons, an NFL record that stood until Chris Gardocki broke it during the 2006 season, finishing his career with 265, (256 reg. season and 9 playoff games). He won 4 Super Bowl Championships, and played 5 Super Bowls (Super Bowl XXIII, Super Bowl XXIV, Super Bowl XXXII, Super Bowl XXXIII and Super Bowl XXXVII).
Presented is a game worn Bill Romanowski San Francisco 49ers football helmet. It dates to the mid 80’s era when Bronco Hinnick was the equipment manager (1984-1998 era). Before Hinnick was Chico Norton. This is from the Bronco era. Also note, the helmet has been reconditioned which happens at the end of the season. Bronco would take the helmets, get them reconditioned. You can determine this as the shell has been painted over. Note, in terms of reconditioning for the ones that did not pass for another season because the use was too great (couldn’t be re-used) they are the ones that Bronco sold.
The BIKE helmet features a gold shell with the classic 49ers logo decal on each side. The helmet and shell are all original. On the exterior, it shows heavy wear with soiling, indentations and hit marks throughout. Ton’s of use is exhibited on the exterior and interior of the helmet. The padding in the interior is well worn with sweat/soiling. The padding also includes a bladder system. His jersey #53 is on a Dymo label in the interior for player identification. Note, the black round circle identifies where there was a hole.
Also to note, there’s a rear warning decal because it started in 1984 to mandate the stickers to appear on the helmets.
As another highlight, it was autographed by Hall of Famer teammate Joe Montana. It was signed in black felt tip on the outer shell by the quarterback (“7-8”). Overall, a tremendous vintage game worn 49ers helmet with tons of use and very difficult to obtain.
