Bill Tilden Signed, Handwritten Letter

Out of stock

SKU: 18280 Category:

From his California home, Bill Tilden tutored many aspiring tennis players in the ’30’s and ’40’s. One such was a young man named Bratto Anderson. Tilden’s homosexuality is well-documented, however, a letter such as the one here offered singularly stresses the discipline of the court. Entirely hand-written in Tilden’s hand, this one-page missive (which concludes on the reverse) is addressed to Bratto and, who we believe was the student’s mother, Marrian. The letter courses a bit through arcane social patter, but its final advice asserts “Above all, play your matches the way you have been practicing. Hit & attack as well as defend.” Then, it concludes “I love you both very much Always yours (signed) Bill.” The page has several irregular, but light folds – with no tears or blemishes. It’s accompanied by the corresponding envelope, postmarked “Saugus Calif. June 30, 1949” The envelope’s stamp is canceled, yet it was opened to leave not a single tear (NM), and it was addressed and return-addressed in Tilden’s hand.
