Description

Presented for sale here is a rare Billie Holiday signed autographed album cover. Blue ink signature, it is inscribed in her own writing to “Tasso, stay as fine as you are Billie Holiday”.  The 1955 album was for “Music for Torching with Billie Holiday”.  The (33 1/3 RPM) record is still in the jacket in perfect condition. The autograph was obtained in 1957, by our consigner  two years before her death. There is another signature on the reverse of the album signed in blue ink by Carl Drinker. He was Billie Holliday’s jazz piano player that evening .Billie Holiday autographs are difficult to find and rarely come up for auction. Very few autographed signed albums exist in the market. Most of her signatures are found on photo’s.

Born Eleanora Holiday, the sultry singer took her stage name from Billie Dove, the silent screen star idolized by her mother. Holiday began her singing career in 1939, at the age of 17. From the time she made her first recordings with Benny Goodman in 1933, her popularity rose rapidly. Holiday performed in Europe and sang and recorded with some of the best Big Bands in the U.S., including Count Basie and Artie Shaw. In 1948, she performed her torchy ballads (“My Man”, “Mean to Me”, etc.) to a “standing room only” audience at New York’s Carnegie Hall. She died in 1959 at the age of 44.  The front cover lightly has wear at the  edges, otherwise fine condition.
