A Sir Bobby Charlton Game-Used #9 Manchester United FC Home Shirt. This garment was an original piece of Manchester United squad attire, and was worn on the field of play by Bobby Charlton during match play. This particular shirt was worn during a Division 1 match versus Fulham, with an original match programme accompanying the item. United won the match 3-1, with Charlton on the scoresheet. Please note that the shirt would have likely been worn in previous matches as well, as shirts were reused to great extent. Upon close inspection, you will come to find this garment in the following condition: The garment possesses that recognizable scent of a garment of age. The garment does show it’s age. There are small holes present to the shoulder, and small pin size holes throughout the body. The white trim is no longer the bright crisp white it would have been 50 years ago. The fabric has a soft feel to it, and has piled with age. There are some faded spots in the color, as well as some faint markings throughout. The Umbro label is intact, although appears to be coming ever so slightly undone due to fraying. The label is bright and visible. There is normal fraying to the edges of the number. Stitching appears solid throughout considering the age of the garment. All the hallmarks you would expect in a garment from this time period.
Please take a moment to review the authentication notes provided below, as well as the provided photographs:
1. Umbro manufactured garment. Made in England. Umbro label to inner neckline reads: “The Umbro “Real” Jersey. As used by Real Madrid FC. The Choice of Champions. Super combed “Tangeru” cotton fabric. Fast dyes. Made in England.” The Umbro label has been folded and stitched into the collar. This may be unfamiliar to the casual collector, however was somewhat commonplace with Umbro shirts from this era. The labels were often stitched in flat, with a square of stitching around the edges…however it was also not uncommon to see versions where the label had been folded and stitched into the collar. Known examples exist in both museums and well known collections where this unique detail exists. Another unique detail in Umbro manufacturing from this time period. This particular label was most commonly seen between 1965-1969, with others appearing/overlapping within that time period as well. There were two known versions of this label style, a simpler version which appeared around 1965, and this version with slightly more text and detail which was most commonplace from 1967-1969.
2. Charlton’s squad #9 stitched to back in cloth.
3. Marked as “OSM” which translates to “one size men’s”. Garment most closely resembles a modern day Medium.
4. Red body with white/cream ribbed trim to collar and sleeve ends. This style was worn by MUFC from 1961 – 1971.
An absolutely iconic and breathtaking example with lovely details relating to the career of Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton. This garment was originally gifted by Mr. Charlton to a local patron who attended every home match during the 1967/68 season and lived adjacent to Old Trafford. This item will come presented in a lovely black gift box with future preservation in mind.
