Boston Red Sox – Ted Williams Spring Training Coaches Jersey Signed & Inscribed to Marciano’s Sporting Goods

The 1978 Boston Red Sox begrudgingly finished second in the AL East at 99-64. At one point the Sox were ahead of their nemesis the New York Yankees by 14 games. However, in what became known as the “Boston Massacre”, the Yankees empowered by a four game sweep at Fenway tied the division at the very end of the season. And in a one game playoff, Bucky Dent hit a home run for the Yankees to aid them into the Playoffs. Consequently, the Yankees won the World Series in six against the Dodgers. So much for the secret weapon the Red Sox employed at the beginning of the season.
They brought in a master of hitting — Ted Williams. Williams served as a special spring training assistant for the Red Sox in 1978 in Winter Haven, Florida. This is a game jersey he wore while helping train the team. The pullover jersey has the RED SOX designator across the front in two-color tackle twill (red/blue) as well as his number on the reverse “9”. Interior collar tagging has the Marciano’s Sporting Goods distribution tag along with size 48 and his number 9 (flaps). Two black marker #9 identifiers are also present. Bottom interior tag has the wash instructions. Overall shows great wear and was signed by Williams (has since faded) to the Sporting Goods company guy in the chest area. It is inscribed, “To Pete Marciano – Best Wishes.”
Provenance letters are also included with an invoice from a previous auction and a letter from a long time historical clothing collector, Elliot Goldman.
