Description

Bruce Lee was the first to introduce the martial arts to the American cinema. He was born in San Francisco but was raised in Hong Kong and at age six he made his first childhood movie in “The Beginning of a Boy.” By the time he returned to the states he was a childhood actor and street fighter in Asia. It was in San Francisco where he began teaching the martial arts in backyards and city parks. Around this time Bruce moved north to Seattle, where he met his future wife, Linda and opened his first Martial Arts School. In 1966 his big break came when he was chosen to play Kato in the TV series “The Green Hornet.” The show was mildly successful in the U.S. but was a major hit in Asia, giving Bruce international acclaim.

His career in movies began shortly after this. His career came to an abrupt end when he passed away from a cerebral swelling in 1973, four days before the premiere of his feature film “Enter the Dagon.”  He died in Kowloon Tong on July 20, 1973, at the age of 32. This signed check in a custom display (11″ x 14″) dates shortly before Bruce Lee died. It was written on on May 28, 1973, and was made out to Gucci for $173.25.

It bears the requisite cancellation perforations and bank stamps. The bold blue ballpoint signature is untouched (“9-10”). Any Bruce Lee signature is exceedingly scarce, but this one’s is extraordinary because it is from right before he died and before his movie career really blossomed. Included with the check is a 7-1/2” x 8″ color photo of the star on-set in combat.
