As a roustabout and miner from 1911 to 1916, Jack Dempsey began boxing in the small mining towns of Colorado under the name of “Kid Blackie”, and he left few survivors. He emerged from these saloon bouts to win over 80 professional fights by the time he was 24 years old; most being vicious knockouts within mere seconds of the opening bell. Dempsey’s iron strength and killer blows beat Jess Willard in 1919, leaving the giant bewildered and shattered. The victory crowned Dempsey as the heavyweight champ and as “The Manassas Mauler.” This classic raw-boned 8″ x 10″ image depicts him circa 1920-24, when Dempsey ruled the ring and American sport. He’s provided collectors with a perfect blue ink signature in the lower left corner. NrMT/MT.
