Deontay Wilder is an American professional boxer. He has held the WBC Heavyweight title since 2015, and in doing so became the first American world heavyweight champion in nine years, which was the longest period of time in boxing history without an American heavyweight champion. As an amateur he won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division at the 2008 Olympics. This led to his nickname of “The Bronze Bomber”, which Wilder coined after Joe Louis, who was known by the nickname of “The Brown Bomber”.
Presented is a Wilder worn USA boxing outfit including a singlet tank top and fight trunks. The shirt is a red Nike Jumpman (Michael Jordan) with a Jordan logo and USA Boxing embroidery on the chest. The interior has the size tag [XXL]. The matching trunks are also Nike Jumpman with a white waistband and sewn on USA logo flanking down the right side (an embroidered USA flag is on the left). A Nike team tag resides in the inside and it is a size XXL. Both items show great use.
These items originate from the Edward Weichers collection. He served as trainer and coach for Australia’s professional world champions, Jeff Fenech and Jeff Harding. This was a direct gift from Wilder to Weichers for his admirable work with him. The outfit was given to Weichers at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs during boxing camp.
Weichers was the head boxing coach at the United States Air Force Academy from 1976-2014. He led the Academy’s boxing team to 19 national collegiate boxing championships, making it the most successful collegiate program in the United States (the second most successful program has only 6 national championships as of April 2014 in comparison). He was selected to coach the Australian Olympic Boxing team, which competed in the 1984 games in Los Angeles. He was also the Head Coach USA World Series of Boxing in 2015 and served as president and vice-president of the (NCBA).
