Don Maynard 1960 Inaugural Season AFL N.Y. Titans Game-Worn, Signed Durene Jersey w/Don Maynard Collection w/Letter

SKU: 39314 Category:

To say that this N.Y. Titans road jersey worn by Hall of Fame receiver Don Maynard is rare may be the understatement of the last half century. Only one Titans jersey has been offered at auction over the last 25 years and that was sourced from Maynard’s teammate Bill Mathis. This one is offered and personifies the ambitious days of the early AFL.

The style is unmistakably “inaugural season” as that was the only season the Titans did not use player names on the back. The league had intended to have all teams comply with the novel NOB idea, but some did not install NOB’s.
Even without the NOB identifier, the jersey is beautiful in its simplicity. It sports a round neck collar and long sleeves with embedded elbow padding. The numeric identifiers in midnight navy decorated the front, verso and sleeves, and their pronounced serafs, which characterized the font style from 1960-67, was both unmistakable and punctuating. While the Titans also used a generic font style on some sets during their three year tenure before their name changed to Jets, this style was most remembered and most linked to the franchise’s early days.

Although there are no repairs, the jersey’s material hue is slightly creamed, and the numeral surfaces are extremely soft and somewhat puckered.

Don Maynard has autographed the jersey on the front left shoulder “Don Maynard 1960 NY Titans.”

Made by MacGregor, it sports the Cincinnati based sporting goods manufacturer’s blue size “40” label at the base of the lower left front tail. It was affixed in tandem with a slight overlap of a washing instructions label. MacGregor was the principle supplier of Titans/Jets jerseys from 1960 to 1967, and was suplemented with sporadic sets of Champion-made jerseys throughout the ’60’s and early mid ’70’s.

The jersey must be considered one of the rarest and most valuable AFL gamers in existence, due to its inaugural season pedigree, its use. direct sourcing from an upper echelon Hall of Famer, simplistic beauty and understated wear.

Score it a 10+ and take solace in the fact that the Pro Football Hall of Fame doesn’t even have a Titans representation. And lest we forget, Don Maynard put up some impressive numbers during his first season in the new league when he snared 72 passes (second) for 1,265 yards (second), six touchdowns and a hefty 17.6 yards per catch average.
