In our past, American Memorabilia has offered many of football’s finest in game-worn artifacts. Franco, Bradshaw, Alworth, Payton, Lou “The Toe”, Butkus, Unitas and Bednarik, to mention a few, have worn the monumental durene jerseys we’ve offered in years past. We’ve unearthed some gems that previously never saw the light of day since being retired from the gridiron.

However, never have we offered an unwashed Hall of Famer game-worn jersey from arguably the most pivotal game in NFL history – nor has anyone else, to our knowledge. This is not simply another garment, mind you. Offered is the actual jersey that Don Maynard wore in Super Bowl III, when the AFL proved to the universe that it deserved NFL peerage. After embarrassments in the first two Super Bowls, many among the media doubted that the AFL would ever be able to compete against the mighty NFL. During Super Bowl week, Joe Namath not only said his team would win, he guaranteed it. This was no conjecture intended to stimulate fan interest either. In the biggest pro football upset to that date, the AFL’s New York Jets stunned the NFL’s Baltimore Colts, 16-7. Namath, despite not even throwing a touchdown pass, was named MVP for his field-general mastery.

As Maynard played his role in the upset, he wore this Jets durene jersey. Although he was injured in the game’s second quarter, Maynard convincingly played decoy as Namath picked apart the Colts defense by targeting George Sauer. Maynard did play the entire game despite his injury, and caught a leaping touchdown pass in the back corner of the end zone, but was ruled out of bounds. Exact photo matches of Maynard wearing this jersey in the big game will be available on-line and forwarded to the winner. Video footage of the game also supports authenticity of the jersey. At the 3:56 mark of the first quarter, Maynard is seen returning to the huddle. The wear (dirt stains) on the back numerals, the general vicinity, is evident on the dvd of the game, and in still photos.

Kudos to Don Maynard. He unwittingly preserved the jersey in its “unwashed” state because he traveled directly to the AFL All-Star Game in Jacksonville after the Super Bowl, and then took it home to El Paso.

The body of this highly sheened white durene (nylon/cotton composite), with embedded shoulder stripes, bears one team repair 1-1/2″ below the “Y” in “Maynard” on the NOB. And a number of grass stains on the verso “3” yet remain.

One interesting customization featured on the jersey is its cut-sleeve ends. Known for unpredictability, Maynard usually cropped his sleeve ends to just under the number. (AMI offered a different Maynard gamer, from 1969-72, and it was characterized by exactly the same sleeve-end style.) While the NOB, front and verso numerals are expressed in single-color green tackle twill, the sleeve numerals are fashioned in single-color white tackle twill against the Jets’ uniquely contrasting color (Kelly green) insert. A lone Sand Knit size “46” tag is sewn into the tail, and the label’s styling indicates ’68 or ’69, prior to the 1970 merger.

A letter from the Hall of Famer will be awarded to the winner. Maynard applied his personal authentication with an autograph on the front, adding the inscription, “Super Bowl III.”

We can only wonder what happened to other durenes from that game (most were recycled for practice use; others terminating in the trash bin). Defensive back Johnny Sample kept his, Joe Namath’s landed in the hands of his friend, an assistant equipment manager, and a few others may have survived the test of time. But this Hall of Fame pullover ranks among the most historically profound and beautifully designed wide receiver jerseys ever to enter the public. The Hall of Fame would thrill to display
