Don Maynard’s Personally Owned Super Bowl III Football (w/Maynard Letter)

Out of stock

SKU: 41124 Category:

Super Bowl III (at the time, called the “AFL-NFL World Championship Game”) and the Jets’ stunning upset victory for the young AFL remains among the most revered Super Bowls in history. Namath didn’t predict, he guaranteed a victory and brilliantly engineered a 16-7 victory in Miami’s Orange Bowl.

The Jets’ victory didn’t go as planned. Don Maynard, who had scored two touchdowns in the AFL Championship Game two weeks earlier, injured his knee in the second quarter of the Super Bowl. And though Maynard played on, gallantly disguising the injury, while Namath turned to Don’s receiver mate, George Sauer, to riddle the Colts. Don Maynard took this game-used Super Bowl III football to the AFL All-Star Game in Jacksonville (which was played a week later) and then curried it back home to El Paso, Texas as a keepsake from the historic AFL Super Bowl win.

The ball is a Spalding-made J5-V with the “Pete Rozelle Commissioner” stamped signature adjacent to the famous AFL logo. The pigskin once held some teammates’ autographs on one panel, but they have faded with time, and presently illegible; however they’re not obtrusive in any way. A virtually unique and historic football used in the renowned Super Bowl III, this enduring treasure comes with an LOA signed by Maynard.
