Description
American Memorabilia has had the pleasure of marketing a number of Pele game-worn jerseys. While the bulk of Pele gamers hale from his days playing exhibition contests with the New York Cosmos, AMI did feature a Pele gamer from his full time days with the Cosmos.
Never have we encountered a Pele like this early ’70s Brazilian pullover. This c. 1971 Brazil National Team yellow jersey was worn by the soccer legend when he was playing for his native land. According to the provided LOA from International Soccer Archives, "Although its exact date of issue is undermined, it bears the hallmarks of a jersey issued after 1970 and prior to 1974." In actuality it had to be issued after 1970 and prior to 1972 because Pele retired from the Brazilian team after ’71.
Sewn in the collar is an Athleta tag and fabric content flag tag. There is some writing on the fabric tag but it is undecipherable. A CBD identifier is captured on the left breast along with three stars atop the emblem. The LOA states the jerseys had three stars after Brazil had achieved its third championship title at the 1970 World Cup.
Outstanding use characteristics are visible on the jersey. The number on back (reinforced with green threads) shows signs of heavy use with noticeable softness and crinkling.
Green ribbed material surrounds both sleeve ends and the neckline. Faintly visible on the front is Pele’s full signature – Edison Pele. A full James Spence Authentication letter will accompany and authenticate the autograph.
The jersey was originally sourced from Pele to Marco Antonio, a close friend of the soccer star’s according to our consignor. Antonio wasn’t sure the game this jersey was used but believes it was used in 1970 after the World Cup or in ’71. A signed letter from Antonio will attend as well as scanned images of him signing the LOA.
