It opened in 1969 as the International Hotel, and was known for many years as the Las Vegas Hilton, then briefly as the LVH – Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. Now the Westgate has seen its fair share of important clients. The most important by far was Elvis Presley. He stayed in his personal suite #3000 during his famous show residency. Fortunate were those who worked with and around him.
Presented for all members of the Memphis Mafia, hound dogs, blue suede shoe wears or gulp, even jailbirds is this rare Elvis Presley stage used microphone that originated from the International Hotel in Las Vegas.
Throughout his performing career, Elvis sang through many different types of microphones and, at least while touring in the 1950s early in his career, was dependent on the venue to provide the PA system. One microphone throughout Presley’s career stands out as his favorite and that is the Shure Unidyne 55S.
It’s not surprising though, because it has a polished chrome look and its futuristic, for the time, stylized design, it is one of the most readily identifiable microphones from an era that saw the birth of a new form of music, one whose fans would dub Elvis ‘the king’ of. It’s also the same style commemorated by the Post Office in the famous Presley stamp which holds the record as the most popular of all time with 500 million printed.
This rare and delightful Shure Unidyne 55S microphone made its way out of the hotel via the maitr d’, George LeForge. Why would Elvis hand this precious tool of Elvis’ trade to this Maitr d? That’s easy. The Pamplemousse Restaurant, originally the idea of owner Georges La Forge and his intended partner Bobby Darin (before the singer’s untimely death,) is Las Vegas’ oldest French restaurant, was opened in 1976. The microphone is as captivating in person as it was back then in the hand of Elvis. From 1969 through 1976, Elvis Presley performed 641 stage shows during 15 engagements at the International/Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas.
Toward the end of his residency, Presley gave it directly to LeForge for his hospitality at the hotel. Noteworthy is that LeForge went on to open the Pamplemousse Restaurant here in Las Vegas. The Pamplemousse was the place to be back then as it was a hangout spot for the city’s top entertainers. It was the spot for the “IN CROWD” and was the Best French Restaurant in Vegas.
The microphone was then gifted to Taylor Hatty in 2008, another generous gesture by the Maitre d’. This will include a provenance letter from the consigner who was gifted it by LeForge.
