This item originates from famous collector Dr. Lonnie Hammargren. Hammargren is a longtime Las Vegas resident since 1969. He was the Lt. Governor of Nevada from 1995-99 and was a candidate for Governor of Nevada in 1998. His eastside home was featured three times on Robin Leach’s: Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. It was also featured on the Travel Channel’s show Vegas VIP Homes and a HGTV show, What’s With That House? It has since become a museum to Las Vegas past. It is usually open for tours on Nevada Day with 8000 attending the Centennial Celebration in 2005.
Nowadays Elton John, Lady Gaga and Madonna dominate the world stage with their over-the-top costumes and artistic performances. Before them came Liberace. He was a charismatic showman who at one time was the world’s highest paid entertainer. He earned as much as $300k a week with 40k fan letters a month at one point. He was the glitz and flash of Las Vegas personified. Wow-factor diamonds and flashy clothes were his trademark on and off the stage.
These are some of his wow-factor trademark wardrobe items. Included in this collection are a stage worn disco style helmet and pair of boots. Both are heavily decorated in his trademark style.
The hat has the base of a construction helmet with the top portion having a heavy caked on layer of glitter. The sides feature disco-like mirror embellishments. It should be noted, some of the glitter on top and a few of the embellishment pieces including the whole brim area is missing. Liberace loved mirrors just as much as he loved rhinestones, so it was only fitting that he have a mirror-covered Rolls Royce Phantom, adorned with galloping horses, to match his mirrored piano and or course, hat.
Also included are a pair of his stage worn black leather boots. They were made by Di Fabrizio (“the Shoemaker to the Stars”) in Los Angeles. They are 19-1/2″ tall and features rhinestones adorned around the top edges. Of note, some of the embellishments are coming unfixed. Overall, a nice pair of high end performance boots.
Liberace was a headline grabber throughout his career. The HBO production starring Matt Damon and Michael Douglas (Behind the Candelabra) only highlighted the interest in his story. Any collector looking for a one-of-a-kind statement piece can find it here from this one-of-a-kind, one-name-only entertainer ready for display.
