Exquisitely Signed Vintage Babe Ruth Model Hillerich and Bradsby Bat.

We introduce this piece by reporting that it’s a store model “Babe Ruth” bat, likely dating to the 1930’s. It was intended for a higher level of the game as confirmed by its 35″ length (so stamped on the knob). The bat provided moderate on-field use as is evidenced by routine (but not abusive) handling. Further, close inspection reveals that the handle is cracked, but by the benefit of highly effective, professional restoration, the crack has been sealed and is now virtually undetectable. As should be expected, Ruth’s endorsement, a simulated autograph, appears cleanly on the barrel. We then address the central feature of this gem. At about 90 degrees from the simulated autograph there appears a genuine Babe Ruth autograph. And though it’s oriented inversely with respect to bat’s standard stampings, that signing is yet a sight of splendor. It’s widely known that Ruth commonly carried a small piece of sandpaper in order to accommodate autograph requests, when a bat was the provided medium. However, such was not the procedure for this signing. A rectangular space (about 3 3/4″ x 1 3/4″) on the barrel was somehow prepared to accept this autograph. We could advance a host of scenarios to explain how (or why) this procedure was effected. But it’s obvious that this is a departure from the ‘sandpaper’ routine, because the isolated rectangle is too well-defined, and the appearance of the woodgrain is too consistent. Ultimately, the devised, lighter-toned surface is itself varnished, and the result of the method has yielded a nicely contrasting background to hold the black ink signature. This is a marvelous and eminently large Babe Ruth autograph – one radiating at a strength of “8” – and it projects from an unusual medium that is fully Ruthian in spirit.
