On August 26, 2017, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Conor McGregor will take to the ring at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in a crossover match of Boxing vs. MMA. Similarly in theory, it’s like IndyCar vs. NASCAR in a novelty match-up. Despite the uniqueness of it all, it should be entertaining.
Amazingly, Floyd Mayweather is still undefeated (49-0 with 26 KO) and considered to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters alive today. Early in his career, Mayweather fought Jesus Chavez. From 1994-01, Chavez had a stunning 36-1 boxing record so he was a contender not to be taken for granted. The fight was held at the Grand Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi on July 12, 1997. Floyd won in the fifth round by TKO. This contest was the first between the two as Mayweather defeated him again in 2001.
Presented is the actual fight worn boxing trunks and robe worn in the ring in Biloxi by the victor, Floyd Mayweather Jr. The robe is simple as it is a shawl-like overlay made from standard boxing fare – a terry cloth towel. It is made by Cannon and is accented with “Pretty Boy” (his nickname) embroidered in black on one side (he wore on his back) and his endorsement brand “enyce” on the other (worn on the front side. It also features a fringe bottom. Mayweather wrote a short thank you note and authenticated the item on sports tape which was readily available and placed it on the garment a black felt marker – “To my friend Bob Case – This is my robe I wore when I beat Jesus Chavez. – Floyd Mayweather 1997.”
Also included are his black ring used boxing trunks. Embellished in white embroidery is a patch with his nickname, “Pretty Boy” on a black patch swatch and endorsement below on the left leg portion, “encye”. The verso also features an “encye” swatch on the waistband in white. The boxing trunks also boast in true Mayweather fashion a thank you note in the same sports tape format, “ To my friend Bob Case – These are the trunks I wore when I beat Jesus Chavez. – Floyd Mayweather 1997.” The interior has a [size] L and are dry cleaning only.
It should be noted that the JSA full letter not only authenticates Mayweather’s signature but his handwriting as well. This is important in the validity of Mayweather’s own words as the primary authentication. In further authentication detail, both the trunks and robe are also seen worn in the fight video below.
Lastly, the collection also includes a strong provenance letter from the original owner / recipient (for whom Mayweather wrote to), Bob Case who is an expert in the field. It reads as follows:
I want you to know Floyd Jr. gave me trunks and robe right after the fight against Chavez. When I was working with Johnny he fought Sammy Stewart at Texas Station in Las Vegas. Floyd dressed in our dressing room for his first pro fight. He was living with his uncle Roger Mayweather who was training him. Roger was our IBA World Champion. I never dreamed Floyd would end to be a Boxing Icon.
Hope your Customers Enjoy. Your Friend Always – Bob Case. ”
