Presented are a pair of Serena William’s tennis shoes that were worn during the 2016 tournament at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Provenance indicates that these were worn (used) during the match-up against Russia’s Maria Sharapova on day nine (January 26, 2016). The number one player in the world (Williams) destroyed Sharapova for the 18th straight time in this match-up. Williams was the defending champion but ultimately failed to defend her title losing to Angelique Kerber in the final. Photos of the front scuffing also suggests these were also worn in the final.
The sneakers that Williams wore in the tournament and the Sharapova and Kerber match were NikeCourt Flare.
According to Nike about her sneakers (summarized):
“Williams, always wears her signature sneaker, the NikeCourt Flare. She has been wearing the shoes since the 2015 Australian Open, and each pair embodies Williams’ unique style. It is recognizable for its innovative ankle brace (a feature Williams helped design herself). At the Australian Open, she sported a black-and-white marble version.
The sneakers come directly from Serena’s camp and are right out of her tennis bag. They show great use with blue markings from the Australian Open court on the soles! The interior tag features important details including [size] WS 11.5, PROJECT X SW, SP16 and are “CUSTOM PROMO” for Serena.
Her tennis resume is unmatched and she will go down in the tennis HOF as one of the best American Tennis stars in history. If you were ever to get a pair of shoes, these are it.. they will bear a premium as they are sourced from her camp.
