SKU: 31297 Category:

Rare signed sheet and original carte-de-visite (circa 1865-67) featuring the family of Mr. Charles S. Stratton, better known to millions of adoring fans as “General and Mrs. Tom Thumb.” Stratton was but four years old when discovered by P.T. Barnum in 1842 and transformed into Tom Thumb. Under Barnum’s guidance, the miniscule child learned to sing, dance, and imitate famous people, and toured the world for the next forty years as one of its greatest theatrical attractions until his death in 1883. His marriage to the equally petite Livinia Warren in February, 1863 was a media extravaganza and frenzy, generating the kind of attention lavished on today’s celebrity weddings. Standing just 2′ 9″ tall, Tom was on a first-name basis with king’s, queens and presidents, including Lincoln. Offered are signatures of the couple rendered on a remarkably clean white 6-1/4″ x 3″ sheet. Stratton inks a rare full autograph in his given name, “Charles S. Stratton”, underscored with “Known as Genl Tom Thumb.” Mrs. Thumb follows with an equally bold and charming signature, adding the date, “Oct – 14th 1878.” Features PSA/DNA encapsulation to assure authenticity and maintain integrity, and is accompanied by an original mid-1860’s CDV (2.5″ x 4″, EX) depicting the famous couple and their newborn daughter – who, by the way, would grow to “normal” stature. These are exceedingly scarce pieces, and as the images attest, very endearing.
