George Chuvalo Fight Worn Gloves vs. Archie Ray w/Original Contract From Manager Irving Ungerman Collection
Out of stock
They don’t make them any tougher than George Chuvalo. In 93 professional bouts, he was never knocked down. Chuvalo went toe-to-toe with the likes of Muhammad Ali, George Foreman and Joe Frazier but was never planted to the canvas. After Ali beat Chuvalo in 1972, the champ gave this compliment to Chuvalo:
“He is the toughest guy I ever fought”, Ali exclaimed.
And this is coming from a guy who rarely paid a compliment to an opponent. This pair of gloves was used by Chuvalo when he knocked out Archie Ray June 22, 1967 in a main event contest at Adams Field House in Missoula, Montana. The dark cherry Everlast gloves (10 ounces) were used by Chuvalo when he scored a technical knockout over Ray in the second round. These were secured by longtime Canadian manager Irving Ungerman. Each of the gloves has the fight’s particulars painted on in white. The right glove reads: “George Chuvalo vs. Archie Ray K.O’d in 2nd. Adams Field House Missoula Mont. June 22, 1967.” The left glove has inscribed “Trained by Freddy Brown Managed by Irving Ungerman.”
The right glove still has athletic tag affixed to the underside. Both of the strings have been removed.
Also included in this offering is the original fight contract, which is signed by Ungerman. For his night of work, Chuvalo was paid $3,000, three plane tickets plus board and lodging for six days.
