The reign of Emperor Haile Selassie traversed 45 years (1930 to 1975) – his was among the 20th Century’s longest ruling tenures in the world. It was his imperiled Ethiopia that the League of Nations summarily ignored in 1935 as Mussolini poised to destroy and absorb the docile empire. Who can forget his passionate plea that fell on deaf ears? Selassie was forced into exile from his conquered nation until Il Duce’s troops were routed from the African nation in ’41. The proud statesman, Haile Selassie, was what historians will term an enlightened monarch as he instituted a constitution providing for a secular legislature, and his administration was fully characterized by an abiding welfare for the Ethiopian populace. In a stately profile, he was photographed (in full regalia) to produce this ceremonious print. Thereon, we find his autograph which he dated “1954.” His penned identity, probably in Amharic, is about “8” as part of this signing extends into a black background. Particularly impressive is this photo’s fashionable steel frame. It measures about 10″ x 13″ and at its top there appears an intricately gilded coat of arms which may be that of the Ethiopian state or possibly that of the emperor’s family.
