Description
Presented is a worn cap attributed to horse racing icon jockey, Willie Shoemaker. The spectacular satin cap was obtained near the Seattle Longacres Racetrack in Washington where Shoemaker raced in many events and won in 1949. The interior has a “RACING COLORS MADE BY FRANK HERBERT” tagging. He made many of the custom design patterns for racers and resided near the Seattle area. The orange and white cap features a bow on the front and a tassel top. The verso features a custom embroidered shoe design and “Maker” in red thread. This is a characteristic featured in many of his personal caps. It shows discoloration and soiling from age and conditional wear quite possibly from the track. Due to storage conditions it has since been flattened. It was signed on the brim by Shoemaker in black pen (“9-10”).
Authentication: JSA auction house letter.
