These red Cleto Reyes boxing gloves belonged to and was worn by boxing legend, Jeff Fenech in a fight against Marcos Villasana in the late 1980’s. . He is a retired Australian professional boxer. He won world titles in three weight divisions, and is best known for his trilogy with Ghanaian boxer Azumah Nelson.  He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2002, Jeff was the 2003 inductee for the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame. Moderns category and the 4th person to be elevated to Legend status in 2013.

Presented is a pair of Fenech fight-worn boxing gloves They were worn in the ring by Fenech vs Villasana.

Villasana fought to a draw for the WBA featherweight title against Antonio Esparragoza on June 23, 1988, with Villasana getting a point deducted for a low blow in the 5th round.

Villasana’s very next bout was a third shot at the WBC featherweight title against champion Jeff Fenech, which resulted in a unanimous decision defeat. Shortly thereafter, Fenech relinquished the title and moved to the super featherweight division.

The wrists feature his sponsor Cleto Reyes logo in black and white and the weight 8 onzas (oz.). Overall, the gloves show tremendous wear with tape remnants concentrated on the upper wrist (in order to be held in place). Fenech signed the pair of red boxing gloves in black felt tip and even added an inscription, “To My Great Friend Ed – Best Wishes Your Friend Always” and “Tough Times Don’t Last Tough People Do – Thanks Ed”.

This item originates from the Edward Weichers collection. He served as trainer and coach for Australia’s professional world champions, Jeff Fenech and Jeff Harding. This was a direct gift from Fenech to Weichers for his admirable work with him. Also provided by Weichers is a photo of Fenech wearing the gloves vs. Villasana. 

Weichers was the head boxing coach at the United States Air Force Academy from 1976-2014. He led the Academy’s boxing team to 19 national collegiate boxing championships, making it the most successful collegiate program in the United States (the second most successful program has only 6 national championships as of April 2014 in comparison).  He was selected to coach the Australian Olympic Boxing team, which competed in the 1984 games in Los Angeles. He was also the Head Coach USA World Series of Boxing in 2015 and served as president and vice-president of the (NCBA).
