Jim Kelly Game-Worn Jersey. This is a 1979-81 Jim Kelly Game-Used Hurricanes Jersey. It was sourced directly from the Hurricanes Equipment Manager. Jersey is consistent with tagging, and the style of Miami Hurricanes Jerseys of this era. The jersey was signed on the back of the “2” of the jersey in silver sharpie.
Wear: The white mesh jersey has solid consistent season-long wear. In addition, jersey numerals and material are very soft due to laundering. On the right shoulder the “12” shows a hit mark on the top of the “2”. the ‘1″ has numeral cracking.
Tagging: Affixed to the bottom left tail is the ‘Russell Athletic” As Worn By America’s Top Teams tagging. The tag has been single-stitched. into the tail of the jersey. The jersey has been hemmed into the seam of the jersey and has been cut. Size “40” can be made out at the edge of the tagging. The thread in the side seam is loose therefore releasing the Russell tag a bit. You can see that if the side seam was tighter, the end of the tag would also be hemmed in slightly more than it is now.
Provenance: The jersey has been confirmed and vetted to have come directly from the Miami Hurricanes Equipment Manager. Excellent sourcing.
Condition: The white mesh jersey has ironed on NOB (name on back) “Kelly” onto a white mesh sewn on the nameplate. Screened on numerals “12” in green/orange appear on the front, back and shoulders. Orange/green/orange screened on striping appear on each of the white mesh sleeves.
Modifications: The jersey has been hemmed up and taken in as per Jim Kelly’s specifications. This style is seen being worn by Jim Kelly throughout the 1979-80 season. The NOB “Kelly” font style matches the font style during this era. 1982 -Font style different has a flip at the tip of the “1”. These numerals are consistent to the “BLOCK” style of this era. The collar is the elasticized “V-Neck” style. Sleeves seem to have been modified and sewn up a bit. Threading is pulling up throughout the right sleeve. The sleeve hem is single-stitched.
Photo Match: We can conclusively match the style to the Getty Image of Jim Kelly at Orange Bowl Stadium in Miami.
Doing a side-by-side match on the Russell Tag, we can match two areas on the tag. The first is the left-hand bottom corner of the tag. There is a slight lift at the corner of the tagging. The same lift is seen on the tagging of the jersey in this circa 1979 Kelly photo.
Second, is the cut on the end of the Russell tagging on the Getty Image of Kelly seems to be cut the exact way this tagging has been. The “4” is sewn into the seam only partially exposing the numeral “4”. After, reviewing the jersey, and based on the provenance of the jersey, we conclude that this is a photo match.
