Never before has the collector had a chance to own a piece of Raider history like this 1960’s AFL jersey from Mr. Raider himself. Collectors get your engines ready to make it to the finish line on this one.
Back in the day, the AFL was a powerhouse that certainly changed the engine of playing football. They essentially took the NFL gound and pound philosophy away by opening up the playbook and adding dimension to the field. This concept sounds familiar to how the modern day game is played but perhaps it is a mere flashback.
Nonetheless, the Oakland Raiders were part of that engine and Jim Otto – “00” himself was the central fusion point of their offense back in the 1960s and 70s. This Otto game worn durene jersey was from the mid-1960s.
The front company tagging is located near the button-up portion of the crotch piece. It denotes “SandKnit [size] 50.
” Otto’s “00” is applied to chest, shoulders and verso in grey tackle twill while a block lettered “J. Otto” is applied directly to the body of the jersey at upper shoulders. The numerals are 9 1/4″ x 5 1/2″.
Conducted to create a trend analysis was an examination of the player’s name. The AFL was an innovator in the application of player’s names to the reverse of jerseys and the trend started with the AFL’s inaugural season of 1960. The Raiders used the J. (first name initial) because there was also a Gus Otto that played for the Raiders during this time period. NOB font size is 2″ sewn onto the nameplate of the jersey. All this is consistent with trend analysis.
Wear is very heavy, with 10+ massive team repairs throughout. Besides, the fact that this comes directly from the source, one of the reason’s this jersey score is the highest possible on the 100% Authentic Team Richter scale (20/20), is because the wear and repairs are so great.
To add further provenance, on the back numerals, it was autographed by Otto in black felt tip with multiple inscriptions including the most important one, “Game-Used” as well as Raiders and “H.O.F. 1980” (on opposite number).
This jersey is a great reflection on real football when players were durable warriors. Everything on this jersey screams “The Best!” Now with Raiders heading to Las Vegas, this particular Raiders Era is even more significant to the Raiders fans and the game used jersey collector.
