Joe Biden & William Roth Signed First Day Cover Cachet FDC – COA JSA

Presented is a first day cover that celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the Volunteer Firemen of America. It was signed by politicians (senators) of Delaware at the time including Joe Biden and Bill Roth. They signed it in black felt tip (“9”).

Joe Biden served as the 47th vice president of the United States from 2009 to 2017 and represented Delaware in the U.S. Senate from 1973 to 2009. A member of the Democratic Party, Biden is the presumptive Democratic nominee for president in the 2020 election. He unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 and in 2008. However, with the suspension of  Bernie Sanders’ campaign on April 8, 2020, Biden became the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee for the presidential election.

William Roth was an American lawyer and politician from Wilmington, Delaware. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Republican Party. He served from 1967 to 1970 as the lone U.S. Representative from Delaware and from 1971 to 2001 as a U.S. Senator from Delaware. He is the most recent Republican to have served as a U.S. Senator from Delaware. Roth was a sponsor of legislation creating the Roth IRA, an individual retirement plan that can be set up with a broker.

The stamp itself is U.S. #971 which commemorates the 300 anniversary of the first volunteer fire department in America. New Netherlands leader Peter Stuyvesant appointed four men to act as “fire wardens” in New Amsterdam – now known as New York City. The wardens inspected chimneys and administered fines to people who had not kept their chimneys swept clear to prevent fires. The money gained from the fines was used to purchase fire-fighting equipment such as ladders and buckets.
