Joe Gans 1940s Carstairs Promo Sign
Out of stock
Great example of this tough early-40s Carstairs promotional piece, honoring turn-of-century champion Joe Gans, a.k.a “The Old Master”, and the foremost lightweight of his time time. Die-cut to about 11″ x 20″ with the original unpeeled adhesive mounts on the reverse, this version pre-dates easel-backs which were provided to retailers later in the decade. Always a conditional challenge, this piece displays nominal wear and handling to the lower edge and virtually no damage to the die-cut extremities. As well, we note a small mounting hole just below the sponsor’s identity (inconspicuous on the front). Most importantly, however, it presents a very impressive full-body photo likeness of Gans, in the prime of his career. And that black and white expanse imaging the champion is peerless in its condition. He died young, of tuberculosis in 1910, yet countless professional journals, record books and experts, including Nat Fleisher, have ranked him among the ten greatest fighters of the 20th Century. This is a fine tribute and representation of one boxing’s most revered figures.
