John Gotti, “The Dapper Don” signed this Christmas card for a good friend. The card was written to actor Frank Sivero who played in many films including the mumbling Mafioso Frankie Carbone in Martin Scorese’s 1990 gangster epic, Goodfellas. The card was signed in black ballpoint by John Gotti in a casual friendly manner, “Frank – Love Johnny.” Gotti only used this nickname as well as Love exclusively for good friends and members of the family. From a “Goodfella” to a “Goodfella”.
The personal note in Gotti’s handwriting reveals, “As you can see I recieved your card – and was glad to do so. I hope this quick card finds you well, and yes, I do get to see you often in your films – you are very good. I feel proud when I see you. As for me, I feel great! Frank, I’m going to keep this a bit short and I’ll write soon after the holidays. Have a great holiday season – and have at least one martini for me. Stay strong!”
The original mailing envelope with Gotti’s prison number/address is also included. He wrote it from the Marion Federal Penitentiary in Illinois where he was sentenced to life in prison, without possibility for parole for murder, racketeering, and other charges. “The Teflon Don” was convicted after lengthy FBI surveillance caught Gotti bad-mouthing his underling, Salvatore “Sammy the Bull” Gravano on tape. After hearing the disparaging remarks, Gravano decided to testify against Gotti, in exchange for a reduced sentence. Nearly ten years after his conviction, Gotti died in the Marion prison on June 10, 2002 of head and neck cancer.
