The Leones de Ponce was a baseball team in the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball League. The organization is based in the municipality of Ponce, Puerto Rico. The team plays at the Francisco Montaner Stadium. Contrary to popular belief, the name Leones comes from their team owner being photographed with a whip as if taming lions. At one time, the “legendary” team scored a continuous run of thirteen championships. The team’s owner is Héctor “Tito” Gracia, and former baseball player with the Leones himself. The team’s colors are red and white.
José Cruz is a former MLB player. During his 19-year baseball career, he played from 1970 to 1988 for three teams, playing primarily for the Astros. He is a member of one of Puerto Rico’s most famous major league families and is the brother of former major leaguers Héctor and Tommy Cruz. Nicknamed “Cheo”, many baseball fans refer to him as Cheo Cruz.
Presented is a game worn jersey from José Cruz who played for Leones de Ponce. In the collar is a Wilson tag, and it dates it to that era (1970’s) [size] 40. The zip front features the Ponce “P” logo across the chest as well as his number “25” in red tackle twill. The neckline and sleeves are striped in red/white. The back has the “DON Q” sponsor logo in red. It was autographed by the Puerto Rican baseball legend Cruz on the chest in black felt tip (“8-9”) for added measure with the inscription “To Best Wishes”. The jersey shows heavy wear throughout with loose threads, soiling and sweat stains. The jersey was signed by Power on the front in black felt tip “8″. Overall, a great Puerto Rican jersey from a legend.
