Description

July 4,1967 Vivien Leigh Signed Letter + Star Sympathy Letters (McCulty Collection) Possibly Her Last Letter / Signature She Died July 8th

This originates from the Don Leigh McCulty collection. Back in the day, McCulty was the Vivien Leigh fan club president and archivist. Being the fan club president had its perks, as he was closely connected to her friends (movie stars, photographers) and family.

McCulty’s collection is extensive and supported in provenance by his frequent letters of correspondence with those in Vivien’s inner circle It should be noted that McCulty was particularly fond of rare photographs.

Included in this collection are a few signed letters to Don including the most important one from Leigh herself (typed thank you) dated July 4,1967  a few days before she passed away (on the 8th she died). Leigh was suffering from tuberculosis and her condition was brushed upon to Don. On her letterhead it reads:

Dear Don & Alma,

Thank you for your charming card – I was most touched by your kind thought of me.

They say it will only be three months, which is really not too terrible, and I am greatly looking forward to returning to the London stage next autumn in Edward Albee’s play “A Delicate Balance”.

With all good wishes to you.

Yours sincerely,

Vivien Leigh (Signed in blue pen)

Other letters in this collection come from Olivia de Havilland other Joan Crawford. Additonal sympathy correspondence is from Gertrude Harley (Vivien’s mom) with a card, note etc.
