Description

Presented is a Ted Williams game used home run hit baseball from 1958. The baseball was swatted by “The Splendid Splinter” on June 29, 1958. It was in the eighth inning versus the Detroit Tigers at Briggs Stadium. The blast was hit on the roof in right field and obtained by one of Williams’ teammates Pete Runnels.

The baseball is an Official American League William Harridge baseball and it displays attractive game-use characteristics. The hand printed details in blue pen were added to the baseball in recollection of the exiting event. “HOME RUN No. 477 – June 29, 1958″ Hit on Top OF ROOF IN Briggs StA.” – “10-7 Boston vs. Detroit 3 Run Homer”.

We must note, that they miscounted this particular home run by adding 10, thus writing “477” instead of the actual count of “467” which would have been his 11th of the season.  This type of error is common in a recollection from a long time ago. Recently, there was another Williams home run baseball that sold from the George Susce collection that was off by three.

Williams added his signature in blue pen on the sweet spot which has since faded but visible. A full LOA from JSA is included with an x-ray type view of the autograph.

A provenance letter on Boston Red Sox stationary (April 1, 1999) is also included from Steve Runnels the son of Pete Runnels. A copy of the newspaper clippings detailing the game / home run are also included along with an autographed Pete Runnels 8×10 photo.
