In joining the national celebration of baseball’s 100th Anniversary in 1939, countless businesses across the country seized the opportunity to identify themselves with this milestone event in America’s history. A certain Pocahontas Fuel Co. in New Jersey distributed this captivating wall-hanger. The central image on the front reproduces that famous Currier & Ives lithograph of the 1865 Championship Game (New York Mutuals vs. the Brooklyn Atlantics) in Hoboken’s Elysian Fields. This hanging poster, however, includes a veritable almanac of the game’s more interesting facts and portrait photo insets of individual luminaries. Of the latter, there are featured all the then members of the Hall of Fame, including Babe Ruth, Connie Mack, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, et al. (Additionally pictured are two of the imminent enshrinees, Eddie Collins and George Sisler.) The piece was rendered on a hard-finish paper and it’s printed on both sides. The reverse continues with extensive statistics and a very entertaining segment of "Do You Know That…?" ; The display measures 27" x 21" and it’s in about EX condition with some minor perimeter foxing and light damp staining along the bottom edge.
