Cleveland Indians – Larry Gardner Signed 8×10 B & W Photo – JSA
Signed: “Larry Gardner”. B&W, 8×10 Photo Shown making a play at second base in the 1920 World Series. Larry Gardner (1886-1976) and his Cleveland Indians teammates are wearing black arm bands to mourn the death of Ray Chapman, who had been fatally beaned earlier in the season, the only Major League baseball player ever killed during a game. “Larry Gardner out at second”, but in fact a Brooklyn Dodger is the base runner and the umpire is signaling “safe.” Before helping the Indians to their first World Series victory, third baseman/second baseman Gardner had been on three World Championship Boston Red Sox teams: 1912, 1915 and 1916. His sacrifice fly drove in the winning run in the final game of the 1912 Series. A high average hitter playing in the dead ball era, Gardner hit only 27 home runs in his career, but he hit two inside the park homers in one game in 1912. Larry signed this photo in blue pen signature grades 8-9.
