Gil Hodges is fondly remembered in Brooklyn and has earned reverence in the hearts of Mets fans. It was Hodges who was at the center of some great Dodger lineups in the 1950s, and who skippered the Miracle Mets of 1969. This Dodgers jacket (size unlabeled) was worn by Hodges when he played in Brooklyn. “Dodgers” is underscored in cursive script on the front. Heavy puckering and dirt, are evident on the front team identifier. Blue and white stretch ribbed trim accentuates the collar, sleeve ends and tail. Of special mention are the gray leather pocket reinforcements which have scuffed from use. Hodges’ 14 is sewn on the sleeve ends in single-color white tackle twill. Like other Dodger jackets of the era, there are no labels, leading one to deduce that the jacket could have been made by a local vendor at the direction of any one of the major Dodger uniform manufacturers, some of whom were known not to include labels, according to Lou Lampson. The leather fastener in the collar is disengaged but the ends remain. The zipper is fully functional. This offering pays tribute to one of baseball’s most endearing figures. Although he died shortly after guiding the Mets to a World Series title, his presence in the game is still appreciated.
