Late ’70s/Early ’80s “Hacksaw” Reynolds Game-Used Rams Helmet

Immensely intriguing is this suspension helmet worn by Jack "Hacksaw" Reynolds in his last and, arguably, best year with the Los Angeles Rams. Reynolds was the prototypical middle linebacker; Pro-Bowler, World Champion, and celebrated gridiron madman. A first-round draft choice in 1970, he hit the ground in full stride, and made an immediate impact in L. A., ratcheting up their storied defense to a whole ‘nother level. He was intense, fast, intelligent, durable, and noted for vicious tackling and superior pass defense. Teamed with Merlin Olson, Jack and Jim Youngblood, Isiah Robertson and Fred Dryer, Hacksaw & Co. shut ’em up and shut ’em down, forming one of the most imposing defenses of any era in NFL history. He played a decade in Los Angeles before moving to San Francisco in ’81, following another Pro-Bowl season and nine playoff appearances, and promptly led the 49ers to a World Championship. To quote Coach Bill Walsh, “If there’s one key factor or individual we can point to for our success in ’81, it’s Reynolds. Jack made more difference than anyone. His experience brought us together." Hacksaw prospered in the Bay Area, but he was – and will always remain – the Los Angeles Rams’ most memorable stopper.

This was his last hat as a Ram, displaying tremendous wear and battle scars galore, indicative of "Hacksaw football" and an All-Pro season. The Riddell suspension helmet features a blue impregnated Kra-Lite shell with the classic custom golden ram horns properly cut around the clips and chin strap snaps. The 12-point suspension is complete with peg package, custom felt rear headband augmentation, crown donut and extra large leather jaw pads. The customized "RAMS" front bumper and midnight navy, green dot full cage, clips and warning sticker are trappings added to the helmet for camp use after Reynolds’ departure. (In fact, Reynolds wore a gray full cage (not double reinforced) with traditional gray clips and without this style’s warning and bumper stickers during his tenure.) Still, a wonderful example of ’70s headgear worn by the man they called "Hacksaw." Where’d that moniker come from? While in college at Tennessee, and after a 38-0 loss to Ole Miss, he sawed a ’53 Chevy in half with a hacksaw! This is a superb battle-tested helmet and display; a rare and simply awesome representation from a legendary defender and marquee player who led and defined his era.
