Louis Vuitton Steamer Trunk-Authentic Vintage 19th Century- Wanamaker

Louis Vuitton Steamer Trunk.

This is a late 19th century Louis Vuitton Steamer Trunk.  Highly desirable, these trunks are a nostalgic walk through time.  The Louis Vuitton design, made in France is highly esteemed in the collectible world.  The Steamer trunk is fabric-lined but does not have any drawers. The lid with quilted interior retaining the original label noting only two retail locations in Paris 1 Rue Solibe and London.

On the opposite interior of the trunk is the label:  Sole Depository in the United States, John Wanamaker Philadelphia, PA.    This label proves that this Trunk was purchased at the famed John Wanamaker department store.

John Wanamaker (July 11, 1838 – December 12, 1922) was an American merchant and religious, civic and political figure, considered by some to be a proponent of advertising and a “pioneer in marketing“.^[1] He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and served as U.S. Postmaster General during the term of U.S. President Benjamin Harrison from 1889 to 1893.

This adds even more historical value to this rare steamer trunk.  Some key features are the stamping on the exterior of the trunk which is still legible- Paris New York.  This trunk would be classified as a monogrammed steamer.  There are two letters “P P” on the exterior side of the trunk, which would be the monogram.

Trunk retains original locks and we are unsure if they are in operational order.  Underneath the lock is the serial K3.  The original carrying handles are still present. SIZE: 22″ h x 43″ w x 22″ d. On each lock are the LV initials stamped into each lock. DRUCKER is stamped on the exterior of the main lock.  The serial number is also stamped in red on the interior of the trunk.

CONDITION: Trunk remains structurally sound, significant soiling and abrasions to exterior. Most notable deterioration to cover of trunk along lower 2″ of the perimeter.  On the top of the Canvas beauty is some staining and some white paint.  It does not detract from the overall beauty of the trunk.  It is made of woven fabric, leather, wood, brass, other materials stamped marks, applied retailer’s label.  Fair to good overall.
