Metallica is an American heavy metal band. The band was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles by vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, and has been based in San Francisco for most of its career. The band’s fast tempos, instrumentals and aggressive musicianship made them one of the founding “big four” bands of thrash metal, alongside Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. Metallica’s current lineup comprises founding members and primary songwriters Hetfield and Ulrich, longtime lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo. Guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to form Megadeth after being fired from the band) and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton (who died in a bus accident in Sweden in 1986) and Jason Newsted are former members of the band.
Presented is a black ESP Vintage Plus guitar signed by an early edition of the Metallica band. This is the style of guitar they used on stage. Signers on the white tempered style pickguard include James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Jason Newsted. Newsted was with the bassist with the band from (1986–2001). It was autographed in black felt tip (“9”) by the guys.
The guitar was signed at the 1999 Billboard Awards performance in Las Vegas on the rooftop of the Rio (12-8-1999). This originates from a promotion director at KOMP Radio here in Las Vegas. The famous rock band signed the guitar during the meet-and-greet portion of the show and appreciated that it was just like the ones that they used on stage. According to the promotion director, this is why he brought the ESP guitar in particular as they most likely wouldn’t have signed it otherwise. He knew they were known to dismiss autographs on other brands.
At the Billboard Awards in 1999, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich presented the award for Artist of the year (which went to the Backstreet Boys). They won the award for Pop Catalog Artist of the Year, which was not shown, and they were nominated for Rock Artist of the Year Award which was also not shown, so now word on if they won that or not. Lastly, the song they performed was Until It Sleeps, and the orchestra was arranged in a circle around them.
The ESP Vintage Plus Guitar features a solid alder body, bone nut, and a rosewood fretboard. ESP’s 400 Series instruments were introduced as the first ESP models sold in the USA. Today they are highly sought after and are widely considered the best “vintage reproduction” instruments ever offered. ESP now issues a limited run of these Vintage Plus electric guitars. Each instrument is “distressed” at the factory to show years of natural wear and tear, with the look and feel of a vintage instrument, and modern refinements that improve it’s playability and feel.
