Set in Neverland, presented is a portrait that depicts Michael Jackson dressed in red/maroon velvet holding a journal of thoughts and sketches called “The Book”. It was the only portrait that the performer had ever sat for in his lifetime. It was done by a well-known artist and friend of Jackson, Brett-Livingstone Strong. That original painting was created for a Japanese businessman, who paid Jackson $2.1 million to sit for Strong.
He completed the painting on which this serigraph was patterned in 1990. It is an impressive and visually-striking color limited edition serigraph entitled ‘The Book,’ 29.5″ x 39.5″ Deluxe Japan edition, signed in the lower border in pencil by Michael Jackson and Strong who also wrote “Sample.” Seen are multiple autographs by Michael Jackson on both sides of the lithograph.
What makes this particular lithograph very desirable and rare, lies in the word “Sample.” We can discern that with the multiple “test” style autographs that this was a sample litho. They were utilizing this particular lithograph to determine where to place the signatures. Supporting the fact that this is the very first sample and one of the first lithos that came off the presses, is the raised seal depicting that this is the Japanese litho which X/125. By utilizing the “X”, they qualified this litho as there first proto-type-sample for all the remaining 125 in the limited edition.
