Mickey Cochrane Signed “Sporting News” Questionaire

Out of stock

SKU: 25542 Category:

Though undated, this simple inquiry conducted by The Sporting News likely dates to the ’30s. It’s a single-page affair, under the publisher’s letterhead, and poses the questions “Who do you consider the greatest ballplayer of all-time? Why?” This one, in particular, was advanced to eventual Hall of Famer, Mickey Cochrane, who responded “Tyrus R. Cobb [because] He had everything.” Cochrane may have been a bit prejudiced as he and Cobb shared a common thread as champions in Detroit, but they were also teammates for a couple seasons under Connie Mack (1927-28). The response is in Cochrane’s penmanship and appears to have been placed in fountain pen. We don’t know how extensive this canvass was, but in all likelihood, it was narrowly limited and its responses were doubtlessly compiled and then published by TSN. This questionaire bears numerous but neat compacting folds – quite obviously for the purpose of mailing (ultimately, about EX, but with no splits or stress holes at the folding junctions). Cochrane’s written response, as well as his signature, are “8-9” in quality. Unique and eminently baseball-related, this is a fine rendering of a difficult signing of the immortal catcher.
