Description

Muhammad Ali fought seven times in Las Vegas. But his connection to the city transcended boxing. The level of entertainment on the Strip is top notch. When Muhammad Ali fought in Las Vegas he was just as much a showman as any entertainer on the Strip. The awe and anticipation behind Ali’s match-ups were tremendous.

Ali went 5-2 in Las Vegas, with his first fight in 1961 when he was known as Cassius Clay. He beat Duke Sabedong at the old Las Vegas Convention Center. Ali returned to Las Vegas in 1965, and on Nov. 22, now known as Muhammad Ali after his conversion to Islam, he dominated Floyd Patterson at the Convention Center, scoring a 12th-round technical knockout to retain his title. Ali scored wins over Joe Bugner in 1973 and Ron Lyle in 1975, both at the Convention Center. But his luck in Las Vegas would ultimately run out.

On Oct. 2, 1980, in the outdoor arena at Caesars Palace, Ali was pounded by undefeated Larry Holmes, as Ali trainer Angelo Dundee had the fight stopped after the 10th round.  It was a very sad night, as it was said. “Ali was only a mere shadow of his former self, and the fight probably should have not been sanctioned.

Longtime Las Vegas sports writer Royce Feour remembers Ali training at the Stardust. “Ali had a profound effect on the public,” he said. “I remember him training for one fight in the Stardust showroom, and the hundreds of fans there were absolutely enthralled. They leaned in on Ali’s every move and every word when he talked to the crowd.”

The presented pair of training worn boxing gloves dates to the latter part of Ali’s career in the 1980’s when he was training out here in Las Vegas.  Each bears the special white stamping at the wrist with the 18 oz. marking and brand SHELTER USA (logo) MADE IN PAKISTAN.” The wear is solid by Ali and shows discolored laces along with sweat discoloration in the wrist and interior area. The exterior has some soiling and is malleable.

The gloves derive directly from the International Boxing HOF referee Richard Steele collection. According to Steele, it’s well known in the ring Ali was sponsored by Everlast however the brand Shelter wanted to promote their new gloves to Ali. In the process of Ali receiving them, he tried them out during in his practice/training sessions. After one of the training sessions, Steele got the worn gloves from one of his staff members (Karen Godbolt). He recounts in the letter of provenance:

“I, Richard Steele, confirm that these Shelter USA Made in Pakistan 18 OZ Red Boxing Gloves were worn by Muhammad Ali during training. These gloves were worn by Muhammad Ali during training for various fights, however, I am not sure what exact fights he was training for.

These gloves were given to Karen Godbolt in the early 90’s. Karen worked for me from early 1990-1996.

Muhammad would visit the Nevada Partners gym, where Mujahaid Ramadan was Executive Director, and I would run the gym. Quite often he would visit the kids and during one of the visits he brought his training gloves that he used from his previous fights, signed them and handed them to Ms. Godbolt as a gift.

Richard Steele – Founder and Executive Director of the Richard Steele Foundation & Boxing Club.”

A final important detail is that authenticity is assured by the autographs the Champ provided on both gloves. The great Muhammad Ali has one of the most distinctive signatures in all of sports. The beauties appear on the top portion of the boxing gloves are impeccable in style and authenticity. The former heavyweight champion responsibly executed his name in black marker (“8”), which contrasts nicely against the red vinyl material.

Overall, a tremendous collectible obtained from the GOAT himself.
