Original Babe Ruth Golfing Photo (Circa 1930)
Out of stock
Description
The period typed caption accompanying this original photograph proclaims "Golfing at Deepdale…Sam Byrd Drives Down the Fairway…Observers: Ruth [and] Rice." Indeed, its subjects depict an outing on the links, complete with knickers and spiked rah-rahs. A little research has determined that "Rice" is Harry Rice who was rostered with the Yankees in 1930 (as was Sam Byrd). The photograph (permanently affixed to a clean album page) is 2-3/4" x 4-1/2" with some minor surface blemishing toward the upper aspect; it’s otherwise in EX/MT condition. The view is quite distant from the subjects, but the profile of Babe Ruth is distinct. The astute golf historian will note that Deepdale (on Long Island) wasn’t opened until 1955, but the enigma is somewhat mollified in that the scene in this photo rather appears to be an undeveloped orchard of sorts. Regardlessly, we catch a glimpse of the Babe in his second favorite pastime.
